The Remembrance Path Labyrinth
Quarry Park, Shrewsbury, July 4th - 5th 2009
The Remembrance Labyrinth, a beautiful piece of interactive and contemplative art, made with 7000 used books, was open for the public, to help to build, experience and walk through on the 4th - 5th of July 2009 in the Quarry Park, Shrewsbury.
Members of the public and local firms supported the artists in collecting books. The Labyrinth, part of the ‘Shift Time Festival’, was walked through contemplatively; a resting place to read a book; a gallery of a thousand book titles; a spiral path to walk run and dance through and a chance to remember lost loved ones.
The artists who created the Labyrinth, Wren Miller and Ray Jacobs, plus other talented photographers, captured many of these moments which were on display alongside selected quotes at the OMH media centre from August 10th to October 15th.

Things that reviewers and members of the public have said
‘There was a huge sense of community and belonging'
“Subtly awesome”
‘It was a beautiful sunny day, with a lovely breeze which flapped open the covers of some of the books so the structure fluttered and changed constantly’
‘The six foot high spiral book sculpture at the centre of the path provided another dimension to the physical shape of the labyrinth and was a source of curiosity for many who reached it’
Musician/percussionist Rick Wilson arrived to provide an amazing atmosphere for the piece, walking the pathway at timely intervals (when it felt right) with a singing bowl or a small drum. People responded to the sound in their own ways: I saw some fall into step with Rick; some actively listened, others used the sound as part of a meditative time, to slow the whole experience down; small children danced.
‘Thank you Wren and Ray, it was amazing’
